Babies Galore!

Huwaaa peaks over a rock showing stalking skills.

Two new cubs from Madonna and 327, born in a completely natural area have raised the number of cubs born at Laohu Valley Reserve this year to FIVE! The cubs were not sighted for over a month as we did not want to disturb the family. The sex of the cubs has not yet been determined. Huwaa was the first cub to start the New Year, followed by Cathay's Alpha and Beta in July. With only 100 South China tigers on the planet, the cubs represent a 5% increase in the global population.

2nd Generation Tigers begin to breed!

img36.jpg

"For the past six months, we have been preparing the second generation South China Tigers born at Laohu, by bonding them with intent to future breeding. First we put the Hulooo brothers individually with Princess and then all 3 together. On Nov 27, we were delighted to witness Hulooo and Princess begin their mating game. This is the first time that the Laohu-born, second-generation tigers have mated. I could not believe my eyes... I will keep my fingers crossed for the first 3rd generation South China tigers soon." - Li Quan

Forming International
Partnerships

SCT has formed collaborations and dialogue with other conservation organizations such as the Wilderness Foundation, Feline Conservation Federation, Dame Stephanie Shirley's Ambassadors For Philanthropy and now the ICCF (International Conservation Caucus Foundation). SCT is proud to be a partner of the ICCF Conservation Council, the strongest association of public and private sector representatives dedicated to international conservation.

The ICCF brings together leaders at the highest level of government, business, and the NGO community and sets a conservation and environmental agenda by coordinating people with scientific expertise, organizations that support and manage programs on the ground, and policymakers who shape legislation. more...

SCT has also been supporting the Conservation Land Trust with its expertise in big cat rewilding training. In China, SCT is also proud to be working with a government NGO as a subsidiary fund 'The China Green Carbon Foundation for the Save China's Tigers (China) Fund'.

Floods, snowstorms and losses

While rejoicing the birth of new tiger cubs, a severe cold front hit Laohu Valley Wildlife Reserve in late July. Heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures and strong winds created catastrophic conditions. The snow quickly froze on much of the fencing and the significantly increased weight and higher wind resistance, caused many kilometres of fencing to collapse, steel fence posts were bent and embedded blocks of concrete were unearthed.

This is the second time this year that we suffered severe weather. In January, we experienced the worst flooding in memory that took four months to recover. The good news is that the tigers were carefully monitored and were safe and sound throughout both calamities. We are so thankful for the passionate efforts of our staff who struggled all night long in howling winds, blowing snow and freezing temperatures and to those who donated in our Snowstorm Appeal. more...

In September we were saddened by the loss of 327 who died after breaking through a gate and attacking another tiger in an adjacent camp. 327 lives on in hearts and the lives of more than 5 babies born this year.

Advisors Survey China Reserves

Survey team trekking in the Hubei reserve site.

In January, SCT scientific advisors lead by Petri Viljoen and Dr. David Smith visited several new tiger reintroduction candidate sites in China, including Hubei, Jiangxi and Fujian provinces and developed assessment reports for the Chinese government.

SCT Wildcat Fund supports cheetahs

This year, SCT's Wildcat Fund continued support to lesser known endangered cats including support of Dr. Laurie Marker and the Cheetah Conservation Fund's wonderful work to conserve the cheetah in Namibia. Previously, we have supported work with ocelots and jaguars and soon hope to provide support to conservation of the snow leopard.

Science news released

A renowned group of international wildcat biologists released an abstract in November that documented the findings of a 'Rewilding workshop'; hosted on our reserve late last year. The workshop evaluated the progress of our project and assessed its role in conserving the South China tiger in the wild. The report provided a background, update and future plans of the project and concluded: "The project is in an early phase, but all second generation tigers (except those born recently) have also passed the first stage of rewilding. They now hunt on their own. The next stage is to prepare reintroduction sites in China and to build up natural prey at these sites." more…
