Celebrating 10 Years of Saving China's Tigers
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Ten years ago, on 9th October 2000 we celebrated the founding of our UK based charity Save China’s Tigers at the Chinese Embassy in London.Li Quan In the years that followed SCT embarked on one of the most ambitious wildlife conservation projects yet. In a last ditch effort to save and restore the critically endangered South China tiger - the oldest subspecies - some cubs were taken from zoos in China to our specially prepared ‘Laohu Valley Reserve’ in South Africa. There they were rewilded, in preparation for their eventual return to their native habitat.
The project has not been without challenges and heartbreaks. But ten years on, SCT is still alive and well. Our pioneering tiger rewilding program has now received enthusiastic approval and recognition from many of the world’s most respected wildcat biologists, who believe it may serve as a model for future carnivore conservation. Even the term tiger rewilding has been accepted into conservation vocabulary.
I would like to use this occasion to thank you - my friends and supporters - for giving me your most generous help over the past and sometimes very difficult ten years.
With very best wishes!
Li Quan, Founding Director

'Rewilding' - a stunning new book released
400 Incredible pictures in 247 pages!
To remember what has been a highly eventful decade, to mark this Chinese Year of the Tiger, and to celebrate SCT’s achievements, we have published our photo documentary book Rewilded by Save China’s Tigers founder Li Quan and published by natural history publisher Evans Mitchell. REWILDING Book
The book was launched on Oct. 13 at SCT sponsor Shanghai Tang’s flagship London store and co-hosted by Shanghai Tang. Sir David TangMany supporters attended this wonderful event including long-term patrons such as Sir David Tang, Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran and Robert Hanson. Nick RhodesLi Quan said, "warm hearted thank-you goes to all of you who helped make it happen and we will count on your continued support.”

Rewilded is the amazing story of Li Quan’s unfaltering efforts to save the most ancient, yet most endangered, South China tiger and the innovative rewilding project she developed. Her moving and engaging diary-style entries are beautifully brought to life with some 400 stunning images. Profits will support rewilding, breeding and reintroduction of the tigers to China. Rewilded will be available from October at all good book stores priced at £39.95, from the publisher’s website www.embooks.co.uk, Save China’s Tigers online store and from selected Shanghai Tang’s stores. The book follows recent publication of a Chinese Diary published by People's Literature Press in China in February.

Renowned wildcat scientists meet at Laohu
Scientists confirm role of Rewilding to save the South China tiger
International wild cat scientists gathered at Laohu Valley Reserve in the Free State of South Africa mid September to evaluate the progress of SCT’s South China Tiger Rewilding and Reintroduction Project  and assess its role in conserving the South China tiger in the wild.Scientists
The Rewilding workshop included Dr. Peter Crawshaw of Centro Nacional de Pesquisa e Conservacão de Mamiferos Carnivoros, Cenap/ICMBIO, Dr. Gary Koehler, Dr. Laurie Marker of Cheetah Conservation Fund,  Dr. Jim Sanderson of Small Wild Cat Conservation Foundation,  Dr. Nobuyuki Yamaguchi of Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences of Qatar University,  and Dr. David Smith of Minnesota University, Chinese government scientists as well as representatives of SCT.
Results of the workshop confirmed the important role of the South China Tiger Rewilding Project in tiger conservation. “Having seen the tigers hunting in an open environment at Laohu Valley Reserve, I believe that these rewilded tigers have the skill to hunt in any environment. We need to use an adaptive learning process when tigers are introduced in China so one strategy might be to release two at a time. Often when you do a reintroduction you may have to repeat the action in order to be successful. SCT should not give up even if the first reintroduction is not successful,” Dr. David Smith remarked.  “In addition, SCT has also done a remarkable job in recovering habitat for South African wildlife. The workshop’s conclusion is timely given the continuing decline of wild tiger populations and their habitat.  The initiatives undertaken at Laohu Valley Reserve may represent a model for the conservation of other carnivores and their habitats”,  Dr. Peter Crawshaw  added. SCT Australia Launched
Wests Tigers Rugby Team Big SupporterWests Tigers Rugbys

Thanx to the dedicated efforts of a passionate supporter, lawyer Steven Prassas, SCT has launched SCT Australia with gusto. Wests Tigers Rugby Club in Sydney showed their support for the program with Wests Tigers players and coaching staff wearing SCT t-shirts during a training session. Steven has organized much media interest, television news, raffles and even an address to NSW Legislative Council by the Hon. John Ajaka MLC speaking on our efforts to save China's tigers. Recently, Steven Prassas was invited to speak at the 4th Annual Animal Action Day on Queensland’s Gold Coast. The aim of Animal Action Day is to raise awareness, appreciation and respect for all animals and the environment; to encourage people to take action for animals by reporting cases of animal cruelty or sign petitions against inhumane practices. Steven Prassas
Claudine Kolle, author of "Tang the Tiger Cub” and Andy McDermott author of “The Tiger Chase” also attended. SCT would like to thank Aldwyn Altuney (L)and Lynn Santer (R) for choosing Save China’s Tigers as this year’s beneficiary charity and to those animal lovers that braved the wet weather. It is events like this, and volunteers like little Katie Jackson, whose has so diligently sold SCT raffle tickets, that make SCT’s work so gratifying. More.

Wildcat Fund Debuts
Small wildcats helped
SCT Founder Li Quan has announced a new Wildcat Fund for the conservation of endangered small wildcats. Wildcat Fund
The evaluation favours wildcats in the IUCN’s Near Threatened or above conservation status categories, especially those species, while in need, are not currently receiving suitable conservation support. Projects applying for funding must be proactive conservation projects led by wild cat biologists and ecologists with proven academic record, but more importantly over eight years of field experience. The fund has already provided funding to Dr. Peter Crawshaw's efforts with wildcats in Brazil and Lory Park’s conservation efforts in South Africa. Read MORE.

 Craig Tracy Bodypainting grabs attention
Craig Tracy Bodypainting
"The Last South China Tiger" was created by artist Craig Tracy, in aid of SCT and in commemoration of SCT's ten year anniversary, as well as the Chinese Year of the Tiger. The video grabbed huge awareness, but unfortunately, was rated ‘restricted’ by Youtube, diminishing potential exposure. More info and VIDEO HERE.
Glycee prints of the painting are available through SCT’s online eStore.
