Week 430 (18th to 24th November 2011)

Huwaa bullies her leftovers and visits with her Mum

One morning at the beginning of the week Huwaa was alone in Quarantine Camp and had no one to bully so she set about amusing herself. She raced about Quarantine Camp with a piece of Springbuck skin in her mouth, its legs flapping as she ran. She jumped onto a stump with her toy and tossed it about before haring off again. She then took a minute break to chew a scrap of meat off a leg then headed to the fence to greet King Henry who slowly ambled up around the far corner. After trading chuffs with King Henry she returned to her scrap of skin and bones and flung them about before lying on them only to contort herself into a pretzel moments later as she tried to drag them out from under herself. When that didn’t work she rested on them and glared at King Henry as if it was all his fault.

A couple of days later Cathay toddled into Hope’s Corner and followed me to Quarantine Camp’s gate and she and Huwaa exchanged chuffs through the gate. Cathay headed off and I let Huwaa in. Cathay turned around as Huwaa stormed after her and continued chuffing as Huwaa tried to jump on her back. Cathay wasn’t in the mood for fun and games and glared at her daughter who tried to pat her mother’s face whilst slowly retreating. As Huwaa retreated Cathay advanced – still glaring and Huwaa tried something different; she added hisses and snarls to the mix of face-patting and still Cathay advanced. Huwaa realised that she was going to get the trouble that she was looking for and lay down – snarling. Cathay left and spent some time wandering around and spraying. Huwaa then headed to Ripples’ fence for a chat with the babies. In due course Cathay lay down at the gate to her camp to wait patiently for it to open and Huwaa killed a shrub. After Cathay had left Huwaa carried a twig around then lay down at Ripples’ gate – showing off her ‘kill’.

Another couple of days passed and it was again time to get Huwaa in with Cathay. They both stood at the gate, one on either side, chuffing at one another. Before Cathay could cross into Hope’s corner Huwaa had barged past her into Ripples, fortunately the babies were not around and Huwaa happily followed Cathay into Maternity camp. They continued to chuff at one another as Cathay stretched out to nuzzle her daughter and Huwaa pulled her ears flat against her head and tapped her mother’s face. Cathay gave Huwaa a playful bop under the chin and the pair chuffed some more. Pleasantries at an end Huwaa tried to climb on Cathay’s back and Cathay turned around and with a well – aimed blow, with just the right amount of force pushed Huwaa to the ground. When no chuff followed Huwaa realised that she had better mind her step and lay watching as Cathay headed to Quarantine Camp’s gate then killed a shrub….again. After a while Cathay paced Quarantine Camp’s fence and Huwaa discovered Alpha sitting at the fence and raced over to join him. They spent an amiable half hour in each other’s company when Cathay decided to join them and lay down at the gate. Huwaa gave way and returned to the shrub whilst Cathay chuffed Beta closer. Cathay then waited patiently to be let back into her own camp and in due course Huwaa left the group and lay down in the centre of the camp. I opened for Cathay to return and Huwaa raced back, climbing on her mother’s back when Cathay was half-way through the gate. Chuffing ensued and Cathay slid out from under Huwaa and sped into Ripples.
